Holding the Thread of Reality brings together selected artists in residence at Miami International

Fine Arts whose practices engage fiber as both material and method. One that binds, traces, and

reimagines lived experience.

Presented within the context of the fiber art triennial reflecting on 250 years of the United States, the

exhibition shifts attention from dominant historical narratives to intimate, personal realities. Here,

history is not fixed, but continuously woven through memory, migration, and acts of care.

The works explore themes of displacement, the resilience of nature within urban space, and

questions of heritage and social responsibility. Across these approaches, fiber becomes a language

for connection; carrying overlooked histories while opening space to reconsider belonging and

continuity.

Rather than offering a single perspective, the exhibition holds multiple threads at once, inviting

viewers to reflect on how realities are constructed, sustained, and rewoven.

Drawing from her Borderline Motherhood series,

Berebichez explores memory, care, and emotional

inheritance. Using thrifted ceramic tea sets, she builds

sculptural compositions that balance delicacy and

tension. Painted, embroidered, and assembled, the

works evoke systems of care that feel both tender and

unstable, poised between harmony and rupture.

Beginnings and Returns brings together works created at critical thresholds

within each artist’s practice. Developed by MIFA artists-in-residence, the exhibition

situates process at the center of institutional inquiry, foregrounding the studio as a

space of experimentation, revision, and renewal. These works mark moments of

emergence and re-emergence, where gestures resurface, palettes shift, and

unresolved questions return with new urgency. Rather than tracing a linear

progression, the exhibition reveals artistic development as cyclical, shaped by

reflection, risk, and transformation. Ranging from sketches and studies to works

that signal decisive transitions, Beginnings and Returns highlights not only the

evolution of individual artworks, but the ongoing formation of the artist.
